Time magazine names CIHR-funded study top medical breakthrough of the year. Time magazine published its top 10 medical breakthrough of 2007. An international research study led by Dr. Stephen Moses, a CIHR-funded researcher, won the coveted first place. In December 2006, two clinical trials of male circumcision proved successful in reducing HIV incidence in young men. CIHR provided over $2.5 million in funding to this study.
The Association of Canadian Academic Healthcare Organizations (ACAHO) has released this report “Moving at the Speed of Discovery: From Bench to Bedside to Business” (see full report - PDF) which provides a framework for the country’s health research enterprise, and highlights the diversity and depth of health research within ACAHO member institutions. A partnership between health services researchers from Queen's University and the University of Ottawa, a community nursing agency and a home care authority in Ottawa led to major improvements in the quality of care for people with leg ulcers. The synthesis of both external and local evidence played a key role in the adoption of an evidence-based protocol and provided the critical context to support a significant reorganization of the existing service delivery model. This case demonstrates that, with a collaborative partnership approach, systematic and transparent research processes can be rapidly developed to support policy change.
