Here’s a deal that Canada’s executive cadre might want to consider: University of Pittsburgh Medical Center announced this week that it will pay French communications vendor Alcatel $300 million to replace its entire communications network spanning 19 hospitals and 400 outpatient locations. The project will streamline UPMC's 150 telephone systems, 30 voice mail systems, and 26 call centers. UPMC and Alcatel will also invest $25 million each in a joint venture to develop software and technology, UPMC's fourth such agreement in the past 18 months. . . . not unlike the $70 million deal Capital Health and Philips reached last year for diagnostic equipment, technology enhancements, research opportunities, and education and clinical trials and testing.
