ANNOUNCED
Accreditation Canada International has been commissioned to develop the national accreditation program for the Kuwait Ministry of Health. The Ministry intends to implement an accreditation program for healthcare quality and to ensure national standards developed specifically for Kuwait are followed.

The Xpert Generation: The new definition of “retired” continues to evolve. Think “cadre”: a small group of people specially trained for a particular purpose. Robert Lester, clinician, researcher, teacher and administrator is now on the list. Retired from Sunnybrook. Important contributor to Canada’s excellence in care. A pioneer in telehealth together with his colleague Dr. Robert Filler as they enabled the inspired Dr. Ed Brown. Retired? Sort of. Is this the definition of the “new” retired already established by Tony Dagnone, Dr. Alan Hudson, Peter Glynn, Duncan Sinclair, Tom Closson, Bob Smith and others? Will Jack Davis join them? What will Dr. Lester do next? You can ask him here.

THE NEWS
Compiled by Health Edition.

  1. April 1, 2009 it is expected to be the date that “any worker certified for an occupation by a regulatory authority of one province or territory shall be recognized as qualified to practice that occupation by all other provinces and territories.” From the Accord reached by Council of the Federation meeting in Quebec City last Friday,
  2. Canada is sixth best among leading nations in preventable deaths – a key measure of a quality health system, and one of the indicators used by the Commonwealth Fund in a report last week rating U.S. health care.
  3. Ontario will be spending $741 million over the next four years to prevent, manage and treat diabetes. Diabetes and its complications represent a $5 billion cost to the provincial health system.
  4. Alberta Health and Wellness has hired international management consultants from McKinsey to conduct a review of the province’s health system to be completed in September. The purpose of the review is to look at options for service delivery improvements.
  5. British Columbia now has 100 nurse practitioners working in the province with the capacity, as of September 2007, to graduate up to 45 more each year.
  6. Physicians in B.C. can get funding and implementation support for Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems from the Physician Information Technology Office (PITO) which was created as part of their 2006 contract agreement with the government.
  7. Wait times for MRIs in Halifax has more than doubled even though the number of MRI machines in Nova Scotia has also doubled.
  8. Sign of the Times? More than 1,000 people made their way to the Kenora (Ontario) Recreation Centre Wednesday for a free Trooper show presented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees. . . . to stand up against the health minister and the Local Health Integration Network, who is trying to “bully our hospital into making health care cuts with their restructuring and under funding of hospitals.”
