ESSAY
The Conference Board: Rank Amateurs with An Agenda?
The Conference Board of Canada has published a summary (see next item for links) that ranks Canada’s health (or is it health care, or is it both) as 9th best out of 16 selected rich countries. Teasingly, the Board released its ranking but not a full-scale report that one hopes will reveal the methods, assumptions, and data on which it is based. In polite company this would be termed peculiar; in academic circles, irresponsible and even contemptible; in most of the media (Longwoods of course excepted), as a gift headline story requiring no further work. Based on essentially no information, can we make sense of the Board ratings and rankings? Read this essay by Steven Lewis here.

Patient Safety Leadership Walkarounds: How Organizations are Enhancing Patient Safety Culture, Part One
Cathy O'Neill and Guna Budrevics
Patient Safety Leadership Walkarounds (PSLWA) have been identified in the literature as a powerful tool to develop patient safety culture by connecting senior leaders and front line staff in open dialogues about patient safety. (Leonard et al, 2004) Many organizations report that this strategy promotes teamwork, facilitates communication and offers an opportunity for constructive dialogue on collective approaches to improve patient, and in some cases, client safety.
