The Health Council of Canada
has released its report on the health of Canada's children and youth. The report, called Their Future Is Now: Healthy Choices for Canada's Children and Youth, sketches the health status of Canada's children and youth, reviews government commitments to child health, highlights programs across the country that are helping kids, identifies why they worked, and offers advice for future action.

In Toronto, York University’s new Faculty of Health (http://www.health.yorku.ca) has its first dean Harvey Skinner.  As Dean, he will will bring together under one academic roof researchers and teachers from the psychology departments of the Faculty of Arts and the Atkinson School of Liberal & Professional Studies, as well as from the School of Nursing, the School of Kinesiology & Health Science and the School of Health Policy & Management. Dr Skinner is currently chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto.

The province of Alberta (http://www.health.gov.ab.ca) working with IBM (http://www.ibm.com/ca) will develop a new electronic health records system to provide patient information to Alberta physicians and other healthcare workers and facilities. Over the course of the two-year, $10 million contract IBM will help manage the roll-out of the system and recruit, enroll and train users such as physicians, pharmacists and other healthcare providers in health region facilities, offices and pharmacies across the province.

The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM, formerly SCAR) has announced its support of original research in imaging informatics with two $40,000 grants for 2007. The grants are part of a continuing program supporting innovative research that promises benefits throughout the medical enterprise. The deadline for applications for 2007 grants is August 1, 2006.
