Are there wolves in these coats of wool?
We have noticed a decided shift in “Open Access” publishing strategies. A recent analysis of BioMed Central shows that they now sell individual subscriptions to premium journals, sell institutional subscriptions to libraries for up to US$9000 per annum, sell advertising and recruitment postings and still charge authors for handling manuscripts. On the other hand, the Public Library of Science, also known as PLoS, started their publications in 2001 with a $9 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. They are now asking for $2000 to $100,000 per annum for institutions to support their initiatives. Individual subscriptions (called memberships or donations) sell for as low as $25 for students to $1000 or more for others. T-Shirts, mugs, back packs and more are thrown in as incentives. Will this become a road to Abilene? (Information taken from these publishers’ web sites on May 07, 2006. For links write to publisher@longwoods.com)
