Regional Healthcare Spotlight:

Why Capital Health in Alberta gets $110 million more in operating funding than Calgary Health:

Saskatchewan’s political bosses face $1.2-billion worth of maintenance work that hasn't been done on their 315 health facilities.

In Quebec 50,000 workers marched during Saturday’s annual May Day rally opposing private health care options in the Montreal region.

Ontario’s Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) starting to show some muscle

  1. Case #1 Faced with the requirement it balance the budget at 16-bed Four Counties Health Services in Newbury, Middlesex Health Alliance has won permission to use reserves to complete its balancing act in three years instead of two. Permission came from the Southwest LHIN after talks with local officials. From the London Free Press
  2. Case #2 The South East LHIN, which funds Quinte Health Care (QHC) and six other hospitals in eastern Ontario, offers up an example of how work can be done in concert with hospitals to achieve balanced budgets. LHIN officials made the suggestion for the hospital to bring in a consultant - Murphy Walsh - to look at ways to reduce costs. The hospital took the suggestion and officials estimate a report done by Murphy Walsh will result in $4 million in savings, but it will take time to realize those savings. From the Belleville Integlligencer
  3. Case #3 On Thursday April 24, 2008 the North West LHIN issued a Notice of Non-Compliance to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for failing to enter into a hospital service accountability agreement with it. From the NetNewsledger.com
  4. Case #4 The South West LHIN Board of Directors reviewed and approved Hospital Service Accountability Agreements for 16 hospitals yesterday for the fiscal year 2008/09 and 2009/10. See the Healthcare Blog
