STIMULUS SPENDING [from the Hamlton Spectator]
The Ontario government says it is doubling its commitment to infrastructure projects over the next two years. Premier Dalton McGuinty announced the $27.5-billion infusion - up from a previously promised $13.7 billion for roads, schools, hospitals and public transit yesterday during a visit to a Toronto hospital. "It's a big number but, you know what ? It needs to be done. Inaction is not an option," said McGuinty. Add in Ottawa's $5 -billion contribution to infrastructure projects and the total comes to $32.5 billion. There are no specifics attached to the cash aimed at creating or supporting 300,000 new jobs in Ontario, which has been hit hard by a slumping manufacturing sector.
The federal government is investing $5 million in a new centre for health-care innovation and leadership at the University of Western Ontario. The contribution will pay for the centre's startup costs, establish a chair in health innovation and pay for demonstration projects during the next five years.
